2 :: THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS FOR YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS
An invitation from Beth Slevcove at Youth Specialties

Do we really want to look at our Savior, the one we are trying to follow, in all sorts of pitiful, compormising positions?

By "walking" and praying the Stations of the Cross, we are given a prayer practice that allows us to get honest with some of the brokenness in our own lives and world. After all, who else is strong enough to hold the depths of suffering that we, our students, and those around us experience? I believe that many of our students are yearning for such a place.

During Lent we are invited to boldly enter into this uncomfortable and unsettling part of our journey. For more of the WHY? and some thoughts on HOW? check out the YS Web site.

We also recognize that many of you have more knowledge and experience with this than we do. We want to hear from you. We also would like to collect stations from various youth groups to use at our conventions. To continue the conversation, email Beth@youthspecialties.com.

LINK DISCLAIMER:
Th YS Update provides links and resources to you that reflect today's culture and thoughts on youth ministry today. This doesn't always mean that you'll agree with what you read; in fact, you may not even like it, but these links will make you aware of prevalent issues affecting your ministry (both now and in the future). We make every attempt to link to "safe" sites (without pornography or offensive images), although the occasional, informative site that includes foul language may be linked to, if deemed valuable enough. Generally, we look around those sites a little bit to verify no offensive material, but the Internet is fluid enough that sites can change from moment to moment, and once acceptable material might suddenly contain unacceptable material or links to questionable sites. We also may completely miss something that you might find offensive. Our intent is not to offend, but rather to inform, educate, encourage, challenge and entertain.

January Event:
Many comments were positive. We are dealing with students and a muli-church event. You could tell the students hearts were into the event and that much time had been given to it's success.

Some comments by the group were...
Alter call seemed confusing. Could have been simpler.
We need to take a closer look at the content of the messages, alter calls.
There needs to be a complete dress rehearsal night.
(look for another email with other comments that came in via email)

May One Event - May 3rd at RRBC
April 24th (Tuesday), 7:00 PM - Walk Through
May 2nd (Tuesday), 7:00 PM - Dress Rehearsal
May 3rd (Wednesday) - The Event!
    6:00 PM - Free Pizza
    6:45 PM - Event Begins
    8:30 PM - Wrap-up and dismissal

Theme: "Lost" - using an Island Experience. Reaching out to those who don't know Christ or don't have a good handle on a relationship Him. Also to those who don't have a good understanding of Worship or negative perception of Christianity. (did I get that right Chris? you can correct it in "reply")

We are still contacting Alvin Reed as a possible speaker.
The band/worship team will be students.

Event Structure
We also discussed the "events" and how they should be structured. Some conclusions were...

Using students is important. Other students take notice and listen differently to their peers. It also challenges and transforms the student teams

A couple of things we (youth leaders) need to do is...

Take time to TEACH students to create/plan an event. Teach them the "bare-bones" of what it should look like.
TEACH and ENCOURAGE students to think "out of the box" when planning. There is no one way to do and event, but there are some necessary elements (prayer, planning, worship, bible, flow, transitions, testimonies, relevance, etc.)

Chris Shelton will me making notes on how this is done with this student team and then we will put together a "training session" to be done with each new student team.

WAYnet Structure: Bylaws, Non-profit study, leadership team, general structure examination.
Doug Radford, Erin Forsythe and Darien Gabriel have been meeting on this subject. They present a great draft of "Bylaws of WAYnet." is on the web under our Google Group. Check it out. Comments must be make by Tuesday, February 28th. Be ready to vote on the draft at the next WAYnet meeting (March 9th). The cost for applying for and becoming a non-profit is about $300.00. This would be an asset to us in receiving funds from businesses.

Dare2Share: training, information & lunch

WAYnet
Sorry this is so late in getting out.

We met Thursday, January 12 at Cubbies. Our next meeting will be February 16th at Cubbies. (do you see a theme? looks good)

Mostly we talk about the upcoming One EVENT (lots of people got BUSTED for calling it a rally - Erin even had a cooking monster yelling at us). The EVENT is going to be great. I think you will enjoy the rally. Oh man, I said rally instead of event. I can't find any whiteout. Maybe no one will notice. Anyway...

We will meet at Sallie B Howard the day before the EVENT. Tuesday, January 24 @ 7 PM. This is for leaders to come, look around and pray. The EVENT team will also be there.

We will need some help with serving and clean up. Erin Forsythe and Rhonda Glover are in charge of that area. Let them know if you can help them.

Please talk to your youth about "conduct" when they get to the event. We don't want the "concert" feel. This is a service. When it starts, there doesn't need to be a lot of up and down.

Jay and Erin have offering bags for each youth group. We are asking for each group to take up an offering before the even and be ready to give it at the meeting. We are putting it in small brown paper lunch bags. This will be a way for each group to help the event and WAYnet. You can take your offering up at your youth meeting before the One Event or on the way. If you need a bag, you can get it from Erin the night before the event for at the event.

MAY EVENT

We also talked about the May event. We are going to direct the group to a theme (give them some ideas) and choose the speaker. Some theme ideas are, "Lost", "Amazing Race", "Loser - lose your life to gain", "Virtual Reality" If you have an suggestions (along with a key verse) please let me know.

The May team will be announced at the January Event. The list I have is...

Alisa Proctor
Sarah Ladd
Allison Carter
Rachel Webb
Kiersten Strange

If there are any corrections, please let me know soon.

PRAY for this event. PRAY for the student team.
